Media Coverage Starts Before the Email

The quality of a pitch depends on the work before it: understanding the organization, identifying a real angle and choosing a journalist for whom that angle is relevant.

Step 1: Find a Newsworthy Angle

Look for timeliness, novelty, impact, conflict, data, expertise, human interest or a connection to a larger trend. Your organization is the source of the story, not always the story itself.

Step 2: Match the Story to the Journalist

Research who covers the subject and whether your angle fits their audience. Smaller, more relevant lists are often more useful than indiscriminate outreach.

Step 3: Make a Clear Pitch

Be concise. Explain why it matters and offer a specific next step. Respect that journalists decide independently whether to engage.

Step 4: Keep Learning

No response is not proof that PR cannot work. Timing, fit and news cycles matter. Refine the angle, improve targeting and continue building a repeatable process.
